RCMP and Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services have determined the chemicals located in a campus lab Tuesday can be neutralized safely without requiring detonation.
We would like to bring this to the attention of all UBC residents.
RCMP and Vancouver Fire are coordinating controlled detonations of chemicals on Wednesday, July 12th at approximately 2 pm. This will take place at East Mall and University Boulevard, and the process is expected to take approximately 2 hours.
Here are the details, provided by UBC:
- RCMP advise there is no danger to the public.
- The following buildings will be closed as a precautionary measure starting between noon and 1 p.m. – AMS Nest, Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre, UBC Bookstore, Networks of Centres of Excellence, Chemistry and Physics Building and Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre.
- The area around the detonation site will also be blocked off to pedestrians starting this morning.
- The chemicals were located Tuesday during a routine laboratory decommissioning.
