Encorp Pacific (Canada) is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit, product Stewardship Corporation with beverage container management as their core business. Encorp’s mandate is to develop, manage and improve systems to recover used packaging and end-of-life products from consumers and ensure that they are properly recycled and not land-filled or incinerated.
United We Can (UWC) is a charitable organization established to support environmental, social, and economic improvements in the inner city of Vancouver. Its mandate is to create economic opportunities for people with multiple barriers living in the Downtown Eastside, through environmental initiatives.
A deposit is charged on all ready to drink beverages at the time of purchase. The deposit is refunded when the empty container is returned for recycling. When consumers place their empties into a recycling bin they forgo the refund. The containers are still collected and get recycled. The problem occurs when containers end up in the garbage stream, they cannot be recovered for the deposit refund nor do they get recycled, they end up in the local landfills.
The collaboration of UNA, UWC, and Encorp has developed a recycling program that any building within the UNA neighbourhoods can join. The program enables the buildings to recover part of the deposit refund on a monthly basis (or they can choose to donate 100% of the funds to UWC’s Charity). The donations go directly to UWC in support of their operations helping to create recycling job opportunities for people in need.
Participation in this program is free, and it means that every time you recycle a refundable beverage container in the designated bins you are contributing to our sustainable environment and a worthy cause that is:
Economically sound: Receive up to 50% of your deposit back while the other 50% supports the UWC professional pickup service. (The UNA recommends a 100% donation towards UWC Charity, the more the merrier).
Socially Responsible: Help create recycling job opportunities for people with multiple barriers in the Downtown Eastside and give them a chance to grow and become independent.
Environmentally Sustainable: Saving energy and raw materials. One less container in BC’s landfills, and one more container that can be recycled into new materials.
The UNA believes that happiness is not all about how much we have; it is about what we can give back to our society. Join in and support us in this meaningful program.

Step 2 – Setting up a New Account
UNA will coordinate with Encorp to prepare information poster in your recycling room and handout materials for your building to raise awareness of this recycling program.
UNA will coordinate with United We Can(UWC) to get in touch with your building.
UWC will deliver a Yellow Encorp Collection Bin to your Building.
Step 3 – UWC Pickup Procedures
United We Can (UWC) driver will require access to the collection bin location.
Every two weeks (Wednesday), the UWC truck will drop by our neighbourhood to pick up full bin and return with a new empty bin.
Full bins collected from your building will be closed and marked with tag to indicate its originate building.
Once full bins arrived UWC facility, workers will input the tag to identify which is its originate building. Each bin will then be emptied and contents will be segregated by hand. Number of refundable beverage containers will also be input into automated computer system.
On a monthly basis, UWC will automatically forward deposit refund to your building strata should your building didn’t go with Full Donation option.
