With growing concerns about the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) would like to update the UNA community, partners and clients on actions we are taking in response. From the onset of COVID-19 in B.C., the UNA has been following the lead of Canadian public health authorities. For now, the B.C. Ministry of Health has assessed that the risk to British Columbians remains low and the UNA encourages you to follow the advice of health authorities. We will provide a list of health authorities at the end of this update. The safety of community members who use our facilities is a top priority of the UNA. UNA community centres (Wesbrook Community Centre and the Old Barn Community Centre) are cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis. We have also introduced enhanced cleaning protocols for these facilities and focused disinfection of high-touch areas including door handles, countertops and bathrooms. We are providing additional cleaning supplies in activity rooms and ask that users continue to wipe down equipment once they are finished. Posters emphasizing proper hand hygiene can be found throughout the centres. Currently, all community centre programming will run as usual. However, in this time of uncertainty, we want to be flexible with refunds and cancellations. We will waive our current cancellation policies in the interim for spring break camps, room bookings, field bookings and birthday parties. We want to make sure that you are not penalized for ensuring your family’s health and well being. At the advice of the B.C. Ministry of Health, we will be cancelling any events of more than 250 people until further notice and, as such, are cancelling Easter at the Barn (April 13) and our Earth Day celebration (April 18). We will provide further updates regarding events scheduled in May. The UNA continues to ask community members and community centre users to help protect others. If you are feeling sick or exhibiting flu-like symptoms, please refrain from visiting UNA facilities. The UNA is working to protect our staff by putting in place an extended work-from-home policy and other new employment policies. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide the community with further updates as needed.
