DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the UNA has received funding under the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for our project Live Well\, Stay Strong: Brain Wellness\, Digital Literacy\, and Physical Health. This federal grant and contribution program supports projects that are led or inspired by seniors who are making a difference in the lives of others in their communities. \nWe are calling for input from seniors in the UNA community to help plan project activities to be implemented in Fall 2022. We are looking for suggestions and ideas\, but also for community members’ passions\, talents and skills to help us run the activities. \nJoin us virtually to brainstorm what activities will lead to a successful project. DESCRIPTION:The All Bodies Dance Project brings together adults of all abilities\, genders\, sizes and backgrounds to explore movement as a means of expression. Participants will experience the joy of dancing in a diverse community of movers where all of our differences and disabilities are celebrated. SUMMARY:Raven: an Interactive Storytelling Performance
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this presentation is to engage audience members of all backgrounds in a light-hearted\, interactive theatre version of “How Raven Stole the Sun” while teaching the holistic values\, traditions and culture of Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast. Indigenous storyteller Dallas Yellowfly will use positive humour\, high energy performance and audience participation\, to make the performance memorable and educational. The presentation focuses on the importance of having respect for the environment\, Indigenous oral traditions and the power of humour in storytelling. This presentation is suitable for kindergarten-aged children and up.

It has a long history of practice in many fields such as medicine and astronomy. \nThis online seminar aims to foster a deeper understanding of the role of citizen science in the fields of biodiversity and conservation. Join us to learn about ways to participate in citizen science and gain insight into the world of plant and pollinators. \nSession facilitator\, Alex Wong\, is a senior Biology student working with the UBC Botanical Garden on citizen science initiatives. He will explain the role citizen science plays in science and explore the various ways to be involved in scientific research. Winnie Hwo is the Senior Public Engagement Specialist for the David Suzuki Foundation\, and she will be sharing her experience on the impact of citizen science on the Butterflyway Project. Daniel Mosquin\, Research Manager at UBC Botanical Garden\, will share his knowledge on plant identification and the tight-knit relationship between plants and pollinators. \nThis workshop is hosted by UBC Botanical Garden in collaboration with CCUB (Climate Crisis in Urban Biodiversity). In honor of Cultural Diversity Day May 21 we will explore how Aboriginal stewardship shapes the forest and increases biological diversity. Some of the past landscape transformations could be right in front of you on the trails you have walked a hundred times but did not see. It’s like learning how to read the land. \nAbout Dr. Sm’hayetsk Teresa Ryan: \nDr. Smhayetsk Teresa Ryan was born into the Gitlan tribe of the Tsimshian Nation. Her research is motivated by her Aboriginal Tsimshian heritage and the guidance provided by her Grandfather to become a fisheries scientist. \nShe completed her PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. Her PhD dissertation centres an Aboriginal perspective of Aboriginal economy and demonstrates how thousands of years of sustainable use based on Ancestral knowledge of cyclic resource production and variability is an intuitive component of Aboriginal stewardship.
