The UNA Board of Directors met on Tuesday, November 24, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. through videoconference. Below is a summary of the meeting.

Please note that this summary being provided to UNA Members as a timely update ahead of the approval of the official meeting minutes at the next Board meeting (December 13, 2022).


 

Save UBC Eagles Campaign

UNA resident Claire England delivered a presentation to the Board about the eagle’s nest in Wesbrook Village that was coned. Director Mojdehi made a motion to add a new item in the agenda to discuss the issue further.

 

Tree Concerns at Hampton Place

UNA resident from Sandringham Strata, Leila Bell-Irving, delivered a presentation to the Board regarding felled trees in Hampton Place due to recent windstorms. Her presentation was supported by Ron Bourgeois, UNA resident from Hampton Place Strata.

 

Campus and Community Planning Report

The November 2022 Campus and Community Planning Report was received by the Board.

 

Electoral Area A Report

The November 2022 Electoral Area A Report was received by the Board.

 

Partnership with Minivillage

Minivillage is a hyperlocal social media platform that aims to encourage offline interactions between neighbours. CEO, Mark Boardman presented about his company’s mission/vision and potential partnership for cross promotions with the UNA. The Board passed a motion that directs UNA staff to work with Minivillage to create a partnership agreement for the Board to consider.

 

Management Report

UNA CAO Sundance Topham and the management team delivered their monthly updates.

 

Finance Committee Update: 2023/24 Draft Budget

The Finance Manager presented the draft budget to the Board.

 

Community Newspaper Policy and Editorial Committee Terms of Reference

A draft of the new community newspaper policy and the editorial committee terms of reference were presented to the Board. The Board offered further direction on both documents.

 

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Board Training

Staff asked the Board for direction no whether they would want to hold EDI training for themselves. The Board passed a motion for staff to find training for Respectful Workplace and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the Board.

 

Neighbours Agreement Committee Update

The report from Director Holmes was received by the Board.

 

Land Use Advisory Committee (LUAC) Update

Director McCutcheon provided a verbal update to the Board and provided a copy of their presentation on the UNA’s position on Campus Vision 2050.

 

Community Engagement Advisory Committee (CEAC) Update

Director Kang presented some changes to the Community Engagement Advisory Committee’s Work Plan. The changes were approved by the Board. Director Kang also submitted the committee’s latest minutes.

 

New Business: Hampton Place Trees

Director Holmes stated that his comments will be provided in the Closed Session.

 

New Business: Community Garden in Acadia

Director Holmes provided a verbal update to the Board.

 

New Business: Support for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Residents

Director Liu provided a verbal update to the Board followed by a short discussion.

 

New Business: Block Watch Program Update

Director Liu provided a verbal update to the Board followed by an update from the Recreation Manager.

 

New Business: Save UBC Eagles Campaign

The Board discussed the issue that residents brought up during the beginning of the meeting and passed a motions for the Land Use Advisory Committee to consider the request from the Save UBC Eagles campaign, that the UNA support the campaign, and that the committee make a recommendation to the Board.
