Climate Emergency Preparedness

Extreme rainfall can cause localized flooding, which can pose risks for properties and infrastructure including transportation networks and utilities. Floodwater can also be a drowning hazard.

It is important to remember that people experience extreme precipitation and flooding events differently. Some residents are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme precipitation and flooding. This includes:

• Those with mobility challenges, who may be unable to navigate flooded areas or rely on elevators.

It’s easier to stay safe and take action when you are prepared. Here are some steps you can take to be prepared for extreme precipitation and flooding events:

• Always follow warnings about flooded areas and roads. Do not walk, swim, or drive in flooded areas.
• Be aware of flood-prone areas on campus, including low-lying roads, parking areas, and landscaped depressions.
• Avoid contact with floodwater which could0 contain contaminants.
• Be aware that transportation disruptions can occur with localized flooding.
• Be aware of safe routes to higher ground and familiarize yourself with building evacuation procedures.
• Be cautious of residual hazards, including structural damage, slippery surfaces, and contaminated water.
• Check your local weather forecasts often to know when to expect more rainfall.
• Sign up for extreme weather alerts using UBC Alert and/or Metro Vancouver’s Alertable. Find out more here.
• Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies (e.g., water, food, flashlight, first aid).

The UNA maintains and cleans neighbourhood catch basins to reduce the risk of flooding.
