Vista Point YMCA Child Care Centre

The Vista Point YMCA Child Care Centre has been made possible through a partnership between the YMCA, the University Neighbourhoods Association and UBC. This centre has been built with the expressed purpose of addressing child care needs for UBC’s growing residential community, with priority for families who do not work or study at UBC. It is intended to complement the services provided by UBC Child Care Services, who give priority to families who work or study at UBC.

Vista Point will offer 25 spaces for children ages 30 months to 5 years. A lottery process will take place for the initial intake and enrolment, with applications accepted until end of day Monday April 18. For more information click here.

UNA Fire Protection Services Cost Restructuring

The Province of British Columbia recently informed the UNA Board that we will now join other municipalities, including the UEL, in paying for fire protection services. The cost for fire protection services will be:

$500K payable in our budget year 2016-17.
$1M payable in our budget year 2017-18.
$1M+ payable in subsequent years.

The new fee is significant, however, the Board has a clear process to manage this issue. We are confident that we will manage the impact to our residents. The UNA and UBC are collaborating through the recently-established Joint Financial Task Force. The Task Force is exploring opportunities for the UNA to raise new revenues and to save costs without reducing resident service levels.

Current tax rates for residents (the combination of rural tax rate and service levy) will not be impacted.

SAFETY TIPS:

While the RCMP recognize that the onus is on all of us to ensure we treat others in a respectful manner, Police recommend the public, to consider the following safety tips:

-Lock windows and doors even when absent for a short amount of time.
-Don’t prop open exterior doors.
-Don’t allow strangers to ‘tailgate’ you into apartment buildings.
-Walk with a friend.
-Beware of your surroundings by avoiding the use of headphones and the distracted use of cellular telephones when in public places.
-Report promptly all suspicious persons and activities to the RCMP.

Pedestrian Crosswalk – West 16th Avenue

A new crosswalk is being added across 16th Avenue to provide a safe pedestrian connection from Wesbrook Place to Hampton Place and East Campus neighbourhoods. It will be will be located at Binning Road and Hampton Place.

Iona Green Playground Equipment Public Consultation

The purpose of the meeting is to:

a) learn about the history of the playground and concerns raised by residents about noise occurring in the playground and
b) discuss ways to address noise concerns while meeting community needs for playground facilities.

2016 Parking Fees

The new Resident Parking Decal and Visitor Parking Permit will be available for purchase at the UNA office (#202 – 5923 Berton Ave.) starting February 15, 2016 during regular hours of operation (Mon to Fri from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm).
